Black then plays d5, challenging White's central pawn on c4. This opening often leads to a closed position with both sides maneuvering their pieces carefully to gain control of key squares. White can later choose to expand on the queenside with moves like b3 and Bb2, or focus on a kingside attack by playing moves like Nf3 and 0-0.
