Philidor Defense: Berger Variation
A solid and flexible opening that focuses on developing pieces and controlling the center.

Re1The opening begins with a pawn move to e4, followed by a symmetrical response from Black with e5. White then plays Nf3 to control the center, and Black responds with d6 to support the e5 pawn. White continues to push the center with d4, and after Black captures on d4, White recaptures with the knight. Black develops the knight to f6, challenging White's central control. White then plays Nc3 to further support the center and prepare for kingside castling. Black mirrors White's knight development by playing Be7, followed by O-O to secure the king. White continues to build up the center with c5, while Black develops the knight to c6. White places the bishop on g5 to pin the knight on f6, and Black responds by developing the bishop to e6. White reinforces the center with Re1, preparing for potential pawn breaks or central maneuvers.
